I just swapped engines over the weekend, and it went pretty painlessly, except that the previous owner had messed up the exhaust manifold studs, and I can't get the new one's to thread in right. I'm going to try re-tapping the holes, but if that doesn't work, what should I do? Do people usually drill it out and re-tap for an oversize stud, or should I use a helicoil insert?

You can use a helicoil there. It's got enough material around the hole to do it safely.
