If original equipment doesn't matter to you, skys the limit... put whatever you can shoe horn in there. people have done subaru six cylinder swaps, GM v8 swaps, toyota V8 swaps, didn't some guy put a honda motor in one somewhat recently?
Subarus are cheap to get to stock STI power (300HP, roughly). Above that they are expensive. An example, if you launch a WRX 5 speed, it's on borrowed time. The STI 6-speed can handle repeated launches and 500+ HP builds, but that costs $3k-4k or more.
If it were me and I wanted to get a reliable engine for not too much, I would go with a low mileage JDM ej205 wrx motor. The one with AVCS (variable valve timing on intake). With an AVCS harness from iwire, and a compatible ECU, and a tune, you will have a fun ~300hp car for a couple grand.
Did you feel that? That was the AVCS kicking in (YO) because you installed iWire's AVCS Bulkhead Kit with your new JDM WRX or STi engine! Maximize the Performance of Your JDM V7-9 WRX or STi Engine by Activating the AVCS.To get the most out of this engine, you will want the AVCS working to help...

ej20x with the twin scroll are pretty easy to find and cheap considering, paired with a proper jdm ecu and an exhaust avcs controller they make really good power and 'rev to the moon' comparatively to the US engines. the downpipe is a bit difficult but there are solutions.
