I am the king of cheap :p So excited right now, Picked up an 04 WRX motor 72k w/ knock for about $600 + shipping :D I also got a call from my buddy in maryland who does exhaust, he's got an 04 STi Catback for me to just have motor is complete aside from throttle body which I'm trying to resolve with the guy I bought it from, and a broken TVG motor probably through shipping but I'm afraid I cant prove it

Plans are see how severe the damage is to the short block then, decide to fix or use the 98 2.5 block to build a hybrid motor.

the ECU and Harness are one their way along with the FPC

Parts needed

Throttle body
TVG Motor (1 broken
Turbo Inlet (turbo side torn)
WRX o2 Sensor
Fuel pump
STi Oil Pump (2.5 hybrid only)
STi Water Pump (2.5 hybrid only)
Down pipe

So far... money spent $900 not including shipping,

looking at about 500 more if I do the 2.5 hybrid with STi internals

Quick Dumb Question: will the 98 2.5 RS o2 Sensors work? or no? (still waiting on the wiring harness so i cant check for myself if it'd even clip in)

No, the 2.5 RS o2 will not work. You cant actually get to the Widebandness of the WRX o2, but it is a wideband (read only by the ECU), RS is a normal Lambda sensor. (I believe this to be true... anyone correct me if I'm wrong...)

Brydon has an EXELENT write up on doing just what your talking about as far as your STi internals

Alright doing some final parts ordering for the rebuild.

Which possition is the main bearing in 3rd or 5th?

I'm trying to find a good source for new crank/rod bearings my 3S-GTE friend sent me toward Clevite bearings, Any one else have suggestions? Has any one used cimotorsports.net? it'd be nice to consolidate my shopping since I can get everything there.

I purchased my stuff from maperformance.com They have great prices on ACL Race Bearings. The main bearings are in stock and the Thrust is on the 5th for the Phase II engines. The Rod bearings are on back order (I'm still waiting on mine).

Brydon uses ACL Race Bearings.... not sure what that means, but he seems to know an awful lot and they are priced nicely.

V8 guys use clevite a lot so they must be doing something right,

Only thing I'm having trouble with is sourcing some inexpensive head bolts and piston rings.

Right now my shopping list includes

Trip to the machine shop for 4-500
- head resurface
- check the crank/polish/balance
- check/clean the block

Rod and Crank bearings -110 (clevite)
OEM Subaru Seal Kit -300
OEM Subaru timing belt - 150
Walbro 255 Pump - 100
WRX o2 sensors (any one have a good location/price, new vs used?)
TVG motor used - 25
Turbo inlet used - 20
tequila - tab

What short block were you going to use then?

The 2.5? or the 04 WRX 2.0?

If you are using the WRX 2.0, and you have rod knock. you will probably need at least one WRX rod (I have one... if you need) and perhaps a new crank shaft. (It ends up being about the same price to get a brand new one than have a machine shop fix yours... ~$300 shipped for new) If the pistons are fine and you keep the exact same pistons, in the exact same cylinders, I don't see why you would *need* new rings, but while you are in there.... might as well.

If you are using the 2.5 shortblock then New pistons and rods and bearings ect... would be in order.
