So I went back to the home town this weekend and talked to a buddy of mine who is selling a couple of his cars in order to pick up a newer STi. He has this 04 up on ebay right now,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars...hash=item160264679156&_trksid=p3756.m14.l1318

but I could prolly pick it up for way less than the buy it now. Prolly in the neighborhood of 10k. 70k miles, supposedly has had zero problems with it the last year+ with it. The bad: Car was in a major hail storm last year and looks like a golf ball. Can't really tell from the pics, but I went and looked at it in person and it's pretty bad, especially on the roof.

I kinda blew it off when he was telling me about it, but the more I thought about it....it makes some sense with me and my fiance's current situation (her car os going to sh#t).

Anyways, what do you guys think about the car? I would drive it for a year or so and then have all the donor parts for my swap. Anyone have any insight into 04's as far a problems or areas of concern?

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm worried about is the headaches that may come with it. When they dropped the headliner to put in sound deadening, they found a bunch of paint sticks urethaned between the roof and the underbracing.

The hail damage actually happened right before he bought it. The car was sitting at a dealership when it happened and he actually picked it up for a little more than what he's selling it for.

I've always been hesitant about buying an STi-type car used. You never know what kind of 70k miles the car has on it. Whether it was driven and taken care of, or the previous owner(s) like to do drop clutch doughnuts in the parking lot. I'll be taking to the bank today to see about what payments would be on it, but I know I'll be able to afford it.

I'll prolly ask him to take it to a garage to get checked out, compression, leakdown, wheel bearings...pretty much shake down the whole car.

Stayed tuned...I may have a new addition to my subie family

^ some very good points there. Thanks

I would never try to restore it. I've also made that mistake before with my 2g DSM....never do that again.
