So I went back to the home town this weekend and talked to a buddy of mine who is selling a couple of his cars in order to pick up a newer STi. He has this 04 up on ebay right now,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars...hash=item160264679156&_trksid=p3756.m14.l1318

but I could prolly pick it up for way less than the buy it now. Prolly in the neighborhood of 10k. 70k miles, supposedly has had zero problems with it the last year+ with it. The bad: Car was in a major hail storm last year and looks like a golf ball. Can't really tell from the pics, but I went and looked at it in person and it's pretty bad, especially on the roof.

I kinda blew it off when he was telling me about it, but the more I thought about it....it makes some sense with me and my fiance's current situation (her car os going to sh#t).

Anyways, what do you guys think about the car? I would drive it for a year or so and then have all the donor parts for my swap. Anyone have any insight into 04's as far a problems or areas of concern?

10k?I think that's a good deal. If you're going to be in the process of swapping in a year or so, I say this is perfect. Who wouldn't want to drive around in an STI for a year and then swap it into their RS?

Problably. See what the rebuilt title was about.

The GC chassis is getting old now and when rust starts appearing on the car its pretty much over. What about all of those times you went over a bump in your RS? The chassis takes a beating and it will eventually collapse around ya.

Don't swap, buy if it wasn't too damaged.

10K is a good deal for an STI. If he's someone you trust, find out more about the damage that happened to the car when it was wrecked in Wisconsin.

Either way, remember that when you buy a car with previous damage, you might get a good price, but you will also get some headaches. As long as you're willing to deal with them, then the startup cost for you is low...

Too true. Listen to the man, however, some problems cannot be fixed with even the most patience. The car could simply slit in half on you.

Good price on the STi, but the hail damage would drive me nuts. Will the guy's insurance cover repairs?!? I would think he'd have that taken care of, personally.

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm worried about is the headaches that may come with it. When they dropped the headliner to put in sound deadening, they found a bunch of paint sticks urethaned between the roof and the underbracing.

The hail damage actually happened right before he bought it. The car was sitting at a dealership when it happened and he actually picked it up for a little more than what he's selling it for.

I've always been hesitant about buying an STi-type car used. You never know what kind of 70k miles the car has on it. Whether it was driven and taken care of, or the previous owner(s) like to do drop clutch doughnuts in the parking lot. I'll be taking to the bank today to see about what payments would be on it, but I know I'll be able to afford it.

I'll prolly ask him to take it to a garage to get checked out, compression, leakdown, wheel bearings...pretty much shake down the whole car.

Stayed tuned...I may have a new addition to my subie family

The car looks pretty FUBAR to me. But the $10k price is very tempting.

I think it is probably more trouble then it is worth. You can get wrecked STi's for less then that to use for a swap. Then since you want to drive it for a year, I can't imagine how many issues will crop up.

Now, at least you aren't just trying to restore it. I've made that mistake before, and if you want a nice car you NEED to start with a good base. Something in bad shape will cost you a fortune replacing stock parts you normally wouldn't touch.

Though, since you want to rip out the guts and put them in your RS, you may end up on top. But I would seriously think about whether this is something you have time and money to deal with or if it could end up being a huge drain. If you can afford to have another car that may not be drivable sitting around, then it seems like a good deal. But I wouldn't rely on it.

What the hell are you guys talking about?
If it was repaired correctly and there are just small hail dents everywhere your arguments have absolutely no ground unless you are lazy.
