Here's Toaster right when purchased:

Unfortunately, after about 200 miles of driving having just purchased the vehicle, it broke down, stranding my wife a block from our house. Good times. Here's the what's been going on with the Forester:

Panning for gold in the oil!

Engine removal:
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...psd4f14b47.jpg

Prior owner must not have completely removed the clutch fork pin and screwed up the bell housing:

Throwout bearing stuck to the pressure plate:

Three different types of spark plugs!

Removing the valve covers, a foreign object in the driver's side head?
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps737fdb16.jpg

Sweet, a sealant tip or something! I'm very thankful the thing didn't strand my wife farther than a block from the house...

Getting the cam gears off...
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...psb19ae123.jpg

Cam time...
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...psc82e59cd.jpg

http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps76f12ded.jpg

Wait, why won't the driver's side exhaust cam come out?
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...psc4e111a8.jpg

Oh, that's right, it's been oil starved. After using a screwdriver with a sock on it to pry the cam off the head:
Sweet, the cam journals are scored!
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps4c14755d.jpg

Cool, the cam is scored too! They match!

And the remaining short block:

I'll be pulling the oil pan to check rod bearings soon, but I don't have high hopes for them either.

And here's the Forester as it currently sits:

I wouldn't wish a motor in worse shape upon anyone...

Basically, the previous owner seems to have been truthful, but inept. He did the head gaskets, timing belt, and replaced the turbo with a rebuilt one, but I'm pretty sure the engine died because of the maintenance he performed. It would've been better off without him working on it.

Crash187 04-23-2013 01:50 PM

You didn't get a pic of the bolt holder?

Combat Chuck 04-23-2013 01:54 PM

Nah, I'm not even sure where that bolt was supposed to go.
