Default Swapped GC 5x114 STI suspension

OK so my 99L is STI swapped. I have 05-07 STI struts with OEM springs. I originally had Swift red springs, but they were too stiff. Well the ride still sucks, and I am assuming it is because the STI struts are severely over dampened. The chassis is moving ALL THE TIME. Think GD STI bobblehead but worse.

My first idea is to send the struts to Feal and have them revalve them for the GC. I am thinking something around 10-15% more than stock GC valving, but opinions are welcome. Probably end up with GC coils so I can get a ride height and spring rate appropriate to the GC.

I swapped some 06 WRX struts and OEM STI springs on my old 98L and the ride was tight but not obnoxious. FAR better than the STI setup.

My second option is to do something else that someone suggests Not trying to go with coilovers. Does Koni make a GC weight specific insert, or GD only?

This would be a LOT easier with 5x100

Disclaimer: I KNOW that my car is not a real GC, but it is far easier than saying "STI swapped GM4 99L" every time.

Koni does make a GC specific strut insert, for autocross with rates of about 380 (can't recall if it was the front or rear rate). The problem is, some of them have been sitting on shelves for years now, as the SVX gurus have pointed out. You'll have to get those revalved to start with.

Nah I have 5x114. It ORIGINALLY had 5x100 but it is not anymore. Thus the issue: There was N-E-V-E-R a 93-01 body Impreza with 5x114, so there is not really any struts valved for this chassis weight, rigidity, etc.

There are some coilovers and companies that I could get to swap the lower front perch (the rear is the same between 5x100 and 5x114) but I want a decent ride quality and have no need for coilovers on this car.

There are some threads on it, and I am still researching, but I hoped a thread would give a quicker answer

Spoke with Feal and they can do a GC revalve that simulates JDM struts...with their own custom valving

how come you dont want to go with coilovers? seems like they would do everything you want in a suspension set up

1: coilovers are going to be even more harsh. That is the opposite of the direction I want to go

2: They are WAY too expensive to purchase and maintain for a DD

3: there are, as far as I know, no coilovers designed for a GC chassis with 5x114 hubs, so I would be back to square 1. Shitty ride quality

Coilovers are overused for street cars, and I am not buying into that trend. There are options available for increased performance without blowing $2500+ on coilovers.

But this thread is primarily about ride quality.

I had 04 STI struts and they didn't bounce at all, yours are probably worn out. Shitty ride quality from coilovers come from the ridiculously stuff springs they usually ship with. Find a company that can swap out the lower perch, and ship them with softer springs, a 280 front and 200 rear will be great, maybe even softer. No one ever changes them out, and then they whine about their 2500 coilovers being to stiff and bouncy.

^This! I would defiantly guess that the struts are done. Also he is spot on about the coilovers being rough due to super high spring rates. I have a set of Whiteline Group 4 Street coilovers on my sti swapped 95 coupe (its got the whole enchilada, 5x114.3 hubs and everything). The coils are 05-07 sti fitment and the ride is very comfortable when they are set at full soft. Most of the comfort comes from the fact that they are shipped with 280f/224r spring rate (stock sti is 188f/173r), its eliminates most of the body roll while still being comfortable. Once I get some sway bars it should be a perfect DD/Autox on the weekend setup.
