Default Trashed 253, Looking for a replacement.

I've done, I blew up my bottom end. Cylinder 4 has developed a lovely rod knock and there we're bits of metal in my oil last night. So does anyone know what models, and model years I pull and EJ253 out of and have it compatible with a 1999 RS?

You need an EJ251, EJ253s are used in later models. Any EJ25 single cam motor from a forester or impreza from 99-05 can be made to work. Usually you can just take your old intake manifold and swap them over to a new block, depending on the year and destination code for the donor motor you may have to move your cam/crank sprockets over as well.

I know mine is a 253 because it uses a MAF. Thanks though I didn't know if there any differences between the blocks or pistons or anything depending on the model. Either way, looks like I'm donor car hunting.

Both used MAF at one point or another, if you have a 99RS its a 251 and that was MAF based fueling. 00-01 had the same engine but MAP fueling, 98 had a twin cam with MAF fueling from older model cars. Its a hodgepodge couple years but any single cam EJ25 long block will be usable as long as it isnt an AVLS block which were made from 06+

sorry, my bad for not giving more info. the previous owners spit a rod through the block (I'm noticing a pattern) so they swapped it with an engine from an '01 legacy. Also, I'd love to do something crazy like a 202 or a 257 swap, but I'm working on a real tight budget rn because work is slow.

JDM non turbo EJ20s like the EJ202 are 5-600 bucks, usually a cheaper and more reliable option than buying somer unknown crap box off craigslist.

Look into the JDM EJ202 N/A swap. Its not glamorous but it works. I have not done it, I've just been reading about people doing it more often on here because you can for the most part find a lower mileage one of those than you can find any low-mileage US-spec N/A motor. There are generally speaking, no low-mileage N/A 2.5RS engines left.

I put a EJ202 in my dad's Outback. It doesnt run bad but in a heavy Outback you might notice the lack of low RPM power.

Now if you put EJ202 heads on a EJ25 block with cams, multi-angle valve job and a light port that would be a good running engine!
