Alex's 99 RS through a decade+ of modding, racing, swapping, neglecting, restoring
Hello everyone! Well, I finally decided to start my journal. As you can see from my join date I have been around. As you can also see from my post count, I am a man of few posts.
I had my RS since 2002, and it sure has been an eventful 13 years, so far. I was only 21 at the time I got it and over that period of time I have done my fair share of things to it, learned a tons of things. I went from putting on an intake and thinking that I was all that to doing a complete rebuild (more on that later). So in this journal I am going to travel back in time with help of photographs do a retrospective on my car's journey to get to the current state of affairs.
Before I do that I am going to put few pictures at different stages of her life to give you a quick look of the transition.
By 2003, I decided that gravel and mud had way too much grip. So I decided to try something a little more slippery. There is a club in eastern upstate NY, Adirondack Motor Enthusiasts Club, that has been ice racing for many many years. A.M.E.C. Ice Racing In 2002, they started putting on this guest event, Studs on Ice time trails, where they had rallycross/autocross style (one car at a time) racing, but on their ice racing tracks where they race wheel to wheel. For those not familiar with ice racing, They just plow fairly wide road course style track on a frozen lake, and race there.
So I went up to the one in Winter on 2003. They had different classes, rubber, studded, and experimental classes. Rubber class was huge, because they were mostly new people with their street cars.
Being that I was new, and also, pretty young, and not wise, I came with my rallycross tires which were just M+S rated, instead of being true snow tires.
Next year they made a rule to require all rubber class car to have true snow tires.
The following year, however, I did not come with true snow tires either! I decided that it would be just a pretty sweet idea to run in experimental class. So got 4 of these
and about a 1000 of these
And went to town...
After I came back from that town this is what I had
I obviously had no idea how well that would work, or last. And I didn't want to drive 6 hours only to find out all of my screws would fall out in 5 minutes. Thankfully, the local weather helped out with some cold and snow. So I went out on some gravel road that does not get plowed and often turns to ice is spots to test these bad boys out.
The results were pretty good. I did a few aggressive passes and the traction was amazing. Also for the most part the screws stayed intact.
Perry's Rally Park - January 2005
This has been by far my most favorite Rallycross to attend. its part of Finger Lakes Region SCCA and is run (or at least used to be) by guy Bruce Perry, literally in his own back yard. Its on his property, next to his corn field. Its extremely well organized, the course layout is awesome and everyone is very friendly. I don't have action pictures from this one, just stationary.
