I started looking for RS's in 2001. I bought this car back in 2002 off of eBay. I was 18 and my mom said she would co-sign on a loan for me if I could find a car for under 10k. This was a tough thing to do since I really really wanted a four door but they were just a year or two old and were going for much more that that.
I almost bought a handful as follows-
2001 RS-T - Been wrecked on the side and my mom blasted that idea.
1998 RS - In NYC, the door had been opened into on coming traffic. Later found out that it was a salvage title and wasn't willing to go that route.
2000 RS Sedan - This one was money! It had 20k and it was in Florida...I called him and was all ready to go down when I found out it was an auto!
2000 RS Sedan - Contemplated buying this from a friend but it also was an auto and couldn't do it at the time.
2002 TS Wagon - This one was a done deal for about a month. The guy was supposed to drop the car off during Thanksgiving. We chatted everyday and I had gotten a bigger loan for 12k because heck, it was only a year old! The day before he was supposed to drop it off...he decided to keep it and sell it to his dad. I was pissed.
1999 RS Coupe - Found on eBay for 10kish...and bam, didn't let it go!
I bought this car when I lived in Virginia. I bought it on eBay from Pittsburgh and it was greatness! It was within my price range, White, clean interior, clean exterior, and most importantly...bone stock!
This car has been through up and downs...and a lot of downs. After I bought it, I drove it for a while to find out that I had rod knock in 2003. The previous owner did not like to use oil, or at least replace it every once in a while. This is where the fun starts! I bought a brand new crate ej22t and had planned to mate it with my stock heads and a Ludespeed III kit. Long story short, the engine blew after 5kish AND the turbo kit was "thrown away" while at a guys garage. No one can be that dumb to throw away a T3/T4 turbo, TMIC, and a whole bunch of fixings but I was out of luck.
After going through 2 engines, I was pretty frustrated with Subaru and decided I was done with them. I still had the car but I had a CRX DD that I was rocking and had no concerns of the RS until one day my friend who was storing the car in his yard kinda asked me to remove it if I wasn't going to do anything with it in 2004. I was than into the mode of getting it back on the road. I found another ej25 that a fellow member had pulled out of his car when he did a full STi conversion. So once again, we threw the stock engine in it and it ran like a charm!
Fast forward a few years into 2009. I now live in Colorado and I work for a Subaru dealership (still do). It was coming into winter and I had planned on doing a full engine overhaul during the winter months including doing my timing belt. Well, it was winter and I didn't quite make it there! I was driving into work when a timing tensioner seized which threw my timing and my engine! Well, I have had it for too long not to swap it into some more power. A friend out here in CO had a company at the time that specialized in Subaru/Porsche drivetrains. I called him up too see what engines he had and he told me that he had an ej20g, 280 hp version coming in. We discussed the details and I thought it was perfect so I purchased it. Well the next week when it came in, I got a fun message from my buddy saying...hey, you have a full on V3 STi! The paint on the manifold had come all off and when they stocked it it, they had listed it as an ej20g with a VF22. I received the ej20k with forged internals, wiring, ecu, VF23...everything I needed with only 25k on it for 1800. I thought that was a pretty good steal for everything that was included!
Onto 2010...done with engines, but now for sweet bodywork! Ever since I laid my eyes on the RS and started dreaming of one, I always wanted a 22B. I started buying the pieces of the kit back in 2005. At the time, every kit was ridiculously priced for me and the only real one semi available was the Aerosims kit. I started to piece this one together over a few years from the same guy and I spent about 800 overall for the fenders/skirts.
Working on the car lot, we take in a ton of trades including one I personally took in which was a 350Z. This particular one had been recently upgraded to 18x9.5 Rota Torque R's with brand new Nitto tires. Well, I thought these would look fantastic on the wide body whenever I ended up getting it done. So I asked my GM if I could swap out stock Z rims and swipe those which he let me do. I had these pretty rims but nothing to do with them so they sat for a while. Now, a bit while later...I decided that whenever I did do the widebody that I wasn't going to run 18's and I wanted to stay with 17's so I listed them for trade on my local forum out here in CO. To my surprise, the next morning a kid said he had just bent his rim and he would buy them from me for 1000. Overall, I spent 200 on these things so I was thinking...done deal. Right before he got off the phone with me, he had mentioned that he could trade the rims for body work. I asked him what kinda shop and if they work with fiberglass which I was excited to hear that his father owned a shop that worked a ton with fiber because they did boats as well. So, I ended up trading him the rims alone in exchange for my rear fenders/skirt to be molded in and painted. It was only supposed to take about a week but once he got in there, he realized it was going to be a little more intense and a month later...I am the wide body! I ended up selling the tires for about 200 which was my initial investment for the rim/tires so not too shabby of a deal in the end!
Now to 2011 and I get a silly deal through my dealership on a 2004 STi 6MT. That is the current project and I will update this when I get a little further into it!
