Front Aeroguards

Got these for $30. Pretty sweet deal. Came with some hardware too.

Anyone know of they are genuine? Made from some weird cushy rubber. Figured for the price they were worth it to get even if they were reps.

I already cleaned em up and tried to get the double sided tape off the best i could, will mount them later tonight.

On the car:

Now get get a lip and a JDM bumper..

Acquiring the Clip

So much like most things i do, i try not to initiate them unless i know good and well what i am getting into and know that i can do them right and not mess up. Well.. since that's almost never the case anymore and everything has a unique story in my life i guess i should get down on paper how this "mess" came about.

My original plans for the car were to get it to 100% stock status, fix up the rear quarter panel and just drive the hell out of it until i had enough money saved up for a V7 STi clip or something of that nature. I never really though about getting a GC STi swap.. until this came up.

The story goes something like this:

I was browsing on ebay one night for GC8 parts, just kind of looking what deals were out there, and things of that sort when i came across one of those Version 6 STi carbon fiber bars for some silly price like $15. Had wanted one (because let's be honest they look cool as hell) and thought: "i'll place a bid i'll never win it for this price" and did just that.

Couple days later when the auction ended as it turns out the price had gone up, but i won the damn thing. No biggie pretty excited. Logged into Paypal, money sent, didn't think much of it. The next day.. or maybe later that evening.. i don't remember.. not important, i got note from the seller that he was local.. turns out he was 20 minutes from me.

We met up, he gave me the bar and we talked a bit and he told me that he had an STi clip he was trying to get rid of. Whoa.. full STi clip ~20 minutes from my house... and he's trying to sell it.. go on. I told him i'd shoot him an email if i was interested (read: parents would let me use the space) and my father and i could come check it out.

I sent him an email and long story short my dad and i went to take a look at it and thought this was too good of a chance to pass up. It's not everyday someone has a full GC8 in their garage waiting for you.

Couple weeks later and some logistics and we had arranged for a truck to come haul it from one garage to another. Went over to the guys house and talked for quite a bit... seeing as the truck took longer than expected to arrive. The guy who sold the clip to me, Richard, was a really cool guy and told me that he wanted to come check out my progress and all that on swapping it and essentially "live through me vicariously" because he was unable to do it himself. It actually meant a that he told me that, not sure why but i guess it tweaked the heart a bit in a good direction.

Anyways.. the truck that we found apparently was in the business of moving pianos, and we decided to give them something new to do. Once the clip was moved into my garage, one of the guys asked to take a picture with the clip because i guess it's not everyday you move half a car around. Really quite nice that someone can enjoy the small things like that. Gives me faith in the human race that i don't see often.. but that's not what this "blog" is a about.

So here it is... sitting in the garage all ready to be ripping and torn apart and thrown into my RS, giving it what i think the car deserves. Because i know that i sure as hell don't deserve it yet.

HVAC came out today, as well as other miscellaneous things like the hood latch, door hinges, and all that fun stuff. Took LOADS of pictures as to where the wiring goes but i won't upload those because there are like 60, and they aren't too interesting. If anyone ever wants to see in depth what the wiring on a RHD car looks like i'd be more than happy to share.

Anyways, fun pics!

Before the HVAC came out, just trying to get an overview of what it looks like

And HVAC out and everything ready to be pulled out and merged. Looks as though i just need to trim the length of the ECU wires, and wire in the LHD cluster, interior lights, headlights, and small bits like that into where the RHD wires go into. Easy enough.

I also found this little wire and line... looks as though it went to a boost gauge some day. Did the V4 STis have factory boost gauges? If so where can i get one.. seems silly to have the connections sitting right there and no gauge.

Hooks up right here..

S'all for now. I need to go take a shower because i need to be cleaned up for my date with my intercooler. Bending fins back.. woo.

Did some more work. Got the radiator out... as well as all the coolant that was left in the system... meaning almost all of it... on my garage floor :monkey:

Also bumper beam and a couple little things. Undid the front x member nuts. The front body is super light... prolly just gonna undo the trans mount and control arm bolts (but i need new sockets to get at those) and just disconnected everything and lift up the frame.

Also I have no idea what this is for..

Was sitting near the ABS module, and connected to this:

And then one more line on the bottom:

Something for Jap emissions? i couldn't follow the line back without laying in a world full of coolant so i'm at a loss.

I want the trans and engine and all that separated from the shell by Friday. I have a week long break from classes next week and want so swap in the entire driveline minus the engine which will go in around May (once classes are done).

It's like a old-version charcoal canister. my 95 used to have one.

...If you just bypass it and run the vacuum line to the intake, you'll sputter on right turns and it will take YEARS to figure out why...

If you block it off at the TB, your tank will never get vacuum, but I dont notice anything bad. Or you can just keep it. It doesn't hurt anything.

Phase 1 of 5 Completed

So my dad and i got the clip in it's entirety on some harbor freight dollies, and instead of putting the engine and all that from the top.. we decided to take the clip away from the engines and trans and whatnot.

Was surprisingly easy. Definitely doable with two, might i say strong, people.

Pulled it up and over and away from the garage for now.. wheeled the rest of the parts into the corner and got my father's car in the garage. Will be able to wheel it right back out tomorrow to crack the engine from the trans and start moving things over.

Pictures per usual:

After disconnecting EVERYTHING (and taking a TON of pictures) it looked a bit like this:

Then it was all like this:

And i was all like "Oh Emm GEE!" at this:

(Wicked bad picture)

Guess that's all for now, though I have a couple questions:

Halfshafts for JDM trans. Will they go right into the 98 RS hubs, or do i need to move the STi ones over right now?

JDM trans (electrically) plug and play? To my knowledge it is.

If i need to move the STi ones now, can i use the turbo x member w/ the 2.5L as is? (To avoid having to swap hubs over and yucky stuff, like taking axles out)

My plan is to get the, Transmission, Clutch (+ MC), Brakes (+MC), diff, full rear suspension and hubs, and driveshaft over to the car by about this time next week. As of 8:55PM today i am on Spring Break and am not (to my knowledge) expected to be anywhere that i need my car for.

Oh, and referring to my Phase 1, here are the 5 Phases I have planned.

Phase 1: Getting drive train and other bits separated from the clip
Phase 2: Getting the drive train minus engine into car
Phase 3: Harness Merge
Phase 4: Getting the EJ20 into the car
Phase 5: Debug

That's all for now.

Cheers

-Garrett

Trans out today.. was a bit of a hassle as i've never had a pull clutch before so some 97-98 WRX service manuals saved my skin.

Anyways, had to get off the DP first which proved to be a pain. Bolts were on WAAAAAAAAAY tight. Some heat treat and all were good.. expect one. Rounded the nut with a 6 point wrench :wtf:. So i got out the dremel and three wheels later looked a bit like this:

Literally no shaft play, and Pretty clean too.

Took of the trans, but after i had the "regular" bolts off i pulled and pulled until i found this picture, with the pin i had to take out (circled in red) in the service manual.

Little cover, or rather, the piece that keeps the pin in, is right here and looks like this (taken after the fact for informative purposes):

And then you have to put a longish bolt in the threads to pull the pin out:

Came right out after that.

You can see the pin pushed in a bit after removal in this picture.

Pretty interesting looking clutch and pressure plate if i do say so myself.

Tomorrow i want to get off the clutch and flywheel and then get off the trans in the blue car and put this one in (and diff and all that). Not sure if i can get that done tomorrow, but i am shooting for the trans and brakes to be in by Monday. Not painting the calipers quite yet.

Questions:

Flywheel and clutch will go on the 251 just fine, right?

Can i use the turbo X member with the nonturbo car? Would allow me to NOT have the take out the axles nuts and just swap hubs over.

Speed sensor and neutral position (i believe it is) should plug in just fine, right?
