Question MY00 2.5 Reflash to MY02,03,04,05,06,07, etc???

*Searched

I read today about ECU tuning (just out of boredom and interest) and how dealers like to modify ecu's to have "play" in them.
So then is it possible that an MY00 ECU could be updated to say an 07' or so?

1. Are there any differences to begin with?
2. Other possible mechanical changes?
3. Am I making any sense or should I go to bed now?

but why doesn't that work...this question cannot be that far-fetched...

because when I had my RX8 I msut have had that thing reflased 6 times.... I think they are up to 9 reflashes now or something... And you could use newer years...

Yes Yes... I know not the same car and all that jazz... but I figured the motors couldnt possibly be that much different...

I know that the WRX and STi guys get reflashes...and I think even some of the older RS ECU's can be reflashed as well. Now if your ECU can be reflashed then theres no reason why you couldn't reflash it to the factory setting of another MY (don't see why you would want to...but I'm sure you could). Newer RS/2.5i ECU's can not be messed with at all, i think, because I was looking for a reflash when I turbo'd my MY05 RS and I couldnt find a damn thing for it...had to get a piggyback.

your telling me the AFR's, fuel trims, timing, ect. are extremely different between say and 01 and an 04? Shouldn't be that different because theres universal maps that come with piggybacks like pp6 that work on a wide range of Impreza's without any adjusting needed.

Dealer's don't reflash for "play", they reflash them for updates that improve engine operation or durability of a certain component. There was a reflash for I think 00-01 RS's and Legacy's to coincide with those cars tendency to eat a/f sensors because they were setup too rich from the factory. The reflash leaned them out a bit on the lower end to extend sensor life.

You can't flash from one year to the other. The ECU hardware changes, in some cases dramatically, from year to year. 98 is it's own animal (DOHC, MAF), 99 is it's own animal (SOHC, MAF), 00-04 are similar (SOHC, MAP), but there were something like 150 different physical ECU's used in that span. 05 is it's own animal (SOHC, MAF - different from 99 MAF, drive-by-wire throttle, different cam profile), 06 is it's own animal (SOHC, MAF, DBW, AVLS), and if I remember correctly 07 is yet another completely new ECU (similar to 06 operation wise, but uses the new CANbus protocol).

Thank you for the posts. I was just curious, because I knew that eh 04 motor was the same but I didn't know that it couldnt be updated.
Thanks for the replies.
