Default Some mechanic hooked up a electronic device to my car... what is it?

A while back my car was having this idling problem and I just brought it by a local auto shop and they hooked up this electronic device to my car and it changed the rpm to under 1k at idle, prior to that it was much higher.

Anyways, I was wondering what is that? And I have reset my ECU a couple of times after that... and now it idles at like 700-800 rpm (which is normal).

What did he do to my car? I'm pretty sure what he did was not good for my car so since I have reset my ECU, did that destroy all the memory thing he programmed into my car?

Any information would be much appreciated.

OBD2 Scanner.
And if he used it to change your idle, it was a subaru specific one.

yea he probably hooked up a diagnostic tool as skidd mentioned... if he adjusted settings it should be subaru specific. We use a similar tool at Nissan called "consult" which can do work in communication with the ecu... Probably preformed a process called "idle air volume learn" which puts the engine through a serise of condidtions to let it know how the engine should be running...

Ummm I doutb it was subaru specific because that auto shop I went to wasn't a Subaru specific one... Should I be concerned if it wasn't subaru specific? Would reseting ecu delete the programm that was inputted?

I also googled a OBd2 scanner and it did not look like that. It was much bigger than that.

well it could be a snap on tool such as the "modis" was it a reputable shop or just some little place? i really wouldn't be worried about it unless it is running weird now or something.
