| Cause Pigpen said so | Here's the lowdown: 94 Impreza L swapped 2.2 from a 96 Legacy Outback. The intake manifold is 1.8. I'm throwing two codes, one for EGR(I believe code 56), and one for VSS(code 33). EGR code is because the 2.2 Legacy motor does'nt have EGR. I'm just wondering how I can make it go away. Anyone? The VSS code is because I have a 97 LGT tranny with an electric VSS on the trans. The car has a cable speedo with the VSS in the instrument cluster. How do I make this code and CEL go away? Someone mentioned installing an automotive hall sensor with a pickup on the wheel, and sending that signal to the ECU. Anyone have any ideas? (Side note) - When I got this car the speedometer was non functional. I tried to fix it but I think the gear in the trans was borked. The cable and speedo are not broken, The problem was in the trans. A couple weeks ago I put in the LGT trans with the electric VSS. I do have a functional speedo though. It's a Cateye cyclocomputer and it works great, and it's adjustable. What a ramble. I hope I'm not confusing everyone. |

| Moderator | Are you using the EJ18 ECU & harness? (The one on the intake manifold.) If so, just plug a EJ18 EGR solenoid into the harness, and the CEL will go away. The solenoid won't actually control anything, but the ECU won't know any better. I have no idea what to tell you about the VSS/speedo. One other thing, though, just an inane detail. ![]() You say you have a EJ22 from a 96 Legacy Outback, but those all came with EJ25D. 96 Impreza Outback Sport, and 96 Legacy L came with EJ22, though. |

| Cause Pigpen said so | I am using the 1.8 engine harness and the EGR solenoid is plugged into the harness. The 96 Legacy Outback automatic did come with a 2.5. All the 5 speeds were 2.2's |

| Moderator | Just checked cars101 and confirmed that... Learn something new every day! ![]() Maybe you have a bad solenoid. This is exactly how I rigged the EGR on my 1.8 -> 2.5 swap and I've never had a CEL for it. |

| Moderator | Just had another thought - Did your 1.8 also have an electrical connection at the EGR valve itself (right next to the pipe coming from the head)? I don't know what that thing does (temp sensor??), what harness it connects to, or if it would throw a CEL if it's not connected. I've just noticed it on some 1.8's at junkyards, but my 1.8 didn't have it, so I didn't have to worry about it. |
