Default EJ222 (Phase II MAP 2.2l) / ej251 Turbo Conversion Parts List

I continue tweaking the EJ222 because its an oddball engine that performs much better than expected!

I'm getting some lip from some friends who I believe are trying to get me to put E/M on the car and swap to a high boost capable engine set-up but there is still a bit more to get out of this set-up - I do not see 11's happening but mid 12's are very possible...

I'd expect low 15's to high 14's at low psi on a bare-bones basic kit tuned to go forever, 13's are possible with a "hi boost" setting - my 100% stock single cam, single port EJ222, no e/m ran a best 1/4 mile et of 12.89s @ 106+mph shifting into 5th gear to complete the 1/4 mile (which is slowing my times down by at least 0.5s).

Here is a list of parts needed to turbo a '99-'01 Phase II MAP 2.2l. I've run this basic set-up on my phase II OBS since '04 & put 47K on my wagon with no major issues - car sees boost a few times EVERY DAY & still passes OBDII Plug in inspection!

Note: ej251 turbo conversions use all of the same parts as EJ222s, but I'd suggest keeping boost low & afrs rich as these engines are not as forgiving as EJ222s if you encounter knock/ping/detonation.

A BARE Minimal kit using the stock ECU & injectors needs -

1. TMIC with BPV (can be vented to atmosphere no problem) '06-07 WRX fits best but I used a '02 as the '06 TMIC was not available in '04 -lol
2. Turbo - use something with a 5psi actuator ? if 2.5l TD04s use a 5psi actuator (2.0l models have a 8psi actuator), VF11's have 5psi actuators
3. Custom up & down pipes (these pop up in the classified every now & then)
4. Walbro 255lph HPHV fuel pump
5. Vortech FMU 12:1 OR 10:1 rise ratio (MAP cars only depending on turbo size)
6. Voltage clamp (folks are having issues with check valves) to keep boost readings from getting back to the ECU - see check valve instructions
7. A cat-back exhaust from a WRX or STi - these will be STOCK 2.2l Quiet with a turbo on the car, but will be LOUD with no turbo on the car.
8. Wrx Plugs gapped @ .028" 6 heat range should be fine but change heat range if needed.
9. Misc. Vac, oil, & coolant lines + Tubing, flanges, u-bends

This stuff should have the car up & running up to 5psi on the stock ECU & injectors with no
problems

When I Boosted my OBS in 2004 I basically put all of the supporting mods on the car before I had the up & down pipes fabbed.

I wanted to avoid any CELS with parts that had an effect on Fuel or sensor readings so I'd put 1 supporting mod on every couple of days test make sure the car still ran well w/o CELs & moved onto the next part - I may have listed silly stuff like gauges / gathering pieces, test fitting out of sequence.

0. Got a stock WRX Exhaust on the car
1. Got a Walbro on the Car
2. Got the FMU on the Car
3. Got the V-clamp on the Car
4. Got the gauges on the car - narrowband / 1 Wire o2 sensor, Boost, EGT
5. Got the oil drain fabbed up & used a sparkplug to seal the drain
6. Got the WRX TMIC to fit
7. Ordered the raw flanges / bends I needed
8. Rolled the car into my buddy's garage late friday AM - got the turbo on the car, called it a night fairly early (6-7PM) & finished up Sat AM by pulling out of the garage with Boost!

EJ222 N/A Mod results if you decide boost is not for you

Hey Carlos this is what im doing to my phase 1 2.2. Im using a vf-11 which I port and polished, 06 wrx intercooler, Vortech RRFPR and I was reading and Im thinking 6:1 is the right ratio for MAF 2.2s. I got the whole Vortech recalibration kit, so Im set. I have a wrx fuel pump but do you think a Walbro Low pressure-High volume fuel pump is needed? Do you think the wrx fuel pump would be cutting out or not effiecient enough? I will be starting to drop it in the car in 2-3 weeks. Thanks for the help and nice write up!

The WRX fuel pump will be sufficient. Keep in mind, the WRX fuel pump sustains ~225 horsepower and still has a bit of room. If you think you're going raise boost levels beyond 10psi, I would suggest an STi 175lph pump or Walbro 255. Other than that, you'll be okay with the WRX one.

now, with this basic setup, how much power is to be expected? i am trying to think if it will be cost effective for me

1st off a WRX pump will NOT work well with a RRFPR set-up.
Fuel volume & pressure is what will keep your motor alive on these set-ups & a WRX pump can't give you enough volume @ the fuel pressures you'll see @ max boost - you'll need a Walbro 255plh turbo fuel pump (high pressure high volume).
A WRX may work for a while on big injector low pressure set-ups using some sort of EM.

Depending on the turbo used I'd expect about 7-10WHP per psi of boost so for 5psi set-up properly I'd expect to see 35-50WHP.

I used a TD05 on my OBS wagon & was able to toy with Rs's equipped with just about all the bolt-ons (intake, Headers, exhaust, high flow cat) then BLOW past them @ just 4-4.5psi...

This should not cost much $$$ to do either.
$500 should get you all/most of the parts needed to do the conversion if you look for deals.

$100 walbro
$100-170 Vortech FMU
$100 v-clamp
$100 Turbo
$100 '06-07 WRX TMIC / BPV / Y - pipe
$100 Up pipe
$??? DP

Yeah your car is different & I wish I could tell you which plate will work, but I have not turbo'd a MAF 2.2l - Yet!
This is why I suggest using a Vortech FMU as you can change the rise ratios.

COOL Link!

I've usually seen high compression 4cyl motors make about 10whp per psi of boost they run when they are set up properly & made a generalization of 7-10WHP per psi but that link really breaks it down!

I made 45 G-tech HP over my base @ about 4-4.5 psi of boost the day I turbo'd my wagon.
I started off with a TD05 Turbo, WRX TMIC/Bpv, custom up/down pipes, Tial 38mm EWG, K&N cone filter & a WRX cat-back exhaust / 2.25" cat + the FMU, walbro fueling solution.

Never put it on a real dyno but that G-tech PRO is stingy with HP #'s - my 4eat '94 Legacy SS (ej22t) rated @ 160 hp/180 tq made just 102 GTHP / 107 GTTQ...
I've made a few more GTHP since then lol....

Yo, i was cruzin with carlos today and i swear on my life i thought it was a swapped wrx haha. He opened the hood up and i saw the red manifold so im like "ok, sti swap"... then noticed it was single cam haha, then he told me it was the stock 2.2, stock bottom end with some turbo bits. Ill say myself it pulled quite hard haha, i couldnt keep up with him anywhere, straights, downhills shit he pulled away uphill haha, i never thought the 2.2 could do that... On what carlos? 10psi?
