Default HUGE Formula 1 News!!

So, it happened.

LONDON -- Renault is following Ferrari in threatening to withdraw from next season's Formula One world championship because of the budget cap imposed by the sport's governing body.

It is frustrated that FIA adopted the new regulations while ignoring alternative plans proposed by the teams, Renault said Wednesday.

Like Ferrari a day earlier, Renault said it will only take part in the 2010 championship if FIA revokes the new regulations.

FIA president Max Mosley is leading the FIA's push to curb costs, with a voluntary $60 million budget cap being made available to teams. Teams that don't adhere to the cap will not receive the same technical freedom.

But big teams fear the rules will effectively split F1 into two tiers, those that can live with the cap and enjoy the technical advantages and those that can't.

"Renault has always considered Formula One as the pinnacle of motor sport and the perfect stage to demonstrate technical excellence," Renault F1 team president Bernard Rey said in a statement. "We remain committed to the sport.

"However, we cannot be involved in a championship operating with different sets of rules and, if such rules are put into effect, we will be forced to pull out at the end of this season."
One day after Ferrari announces their retirement from F1 after this season, Renault does the same. No, it's not set in stone. And something like this could really change the decisions made by the FIA, problem being. Max is a looney, stubborn and has a son that committed suicide just 1 week ago. So I wouldn't be surprised if the FIA stood firm and didn't overturn their decision.

I personally saw this coming, there have been talks about using the same chassis for every team to build around in 2010-2011 for a few years now, and the FIA just continues to dumb the sport down more and more. Putting a cap on how much R&D they can do is just stupid. The $300M+ in R&D that teams like Ferrari, McLaren and Toyota spend have a lot to do with the cars we use every day. The minor tweaks that they can make to completely turn their season around by dancing around the rules is fun and entertaining.

I'm not taking anything away from Brawn GP or Red Bull Ferrari. They have built some sweet cars, did everything right from the start. But they wouldn't have a chance if Ferrari, BMW and McLaren had more chances to test their cars. I think we're about to see each one of these teams show why they have been where they have been for so long... on top.

Cliff Notes: I don't like "making it a driver's sport". If I was looking for that, I would watch WRC (Which I do watch as well), Formula 1 is a technician's sport. Don't take that away from them.

^ tend to agree with you. F1 is the place for uber-technical stuff! They shouldn't stifle that.
I like trying to make it as level a field as they can to keep the competition up, but at what cost?

Ferrari hasn't pulled out of F1 yet as a ruling on the budget cap hasn't been official decided on.

I don't think there should be two tiers but they should have a budget cap on things outside of testing, technical freedom and such.

If it is passed, I don't think Ferrari, Renault, McLaren, BMW and Toyota will have a problem saying "Goodbye F1".

I agree 100% but we can't jump to conclusion until they decide for sure. I really dislike Max but Bernie really thinks Ferrari isn't going anywhere.

Also, you had me searching everywhere to see if anything came out about Ferrari since you said they announced their retirement.

hahaha. I said "It's not set in stone". But it will happen if it goes through. There is no doubt in my mind about that.

This whole FIA thing it's really pissing me off. I can see where they are trying to add the reduction of costs I see where they are coming from, but this is F1 we are talking about, I already see (of course nothing is etched in stone yet) this will turn out to be like the whole IRL and Cart fiasgo of the late 90's, I hope it doesn't turn into that. I wonder what Ecclestone things about this whole thing, wonder if he is pro ( I would assume he is) or against it.

Thumbs down

Beyond a doubt it is time for Bernie and Max to move to the tropics with a couple of expensive whores with whips. There are no larger egos on the planet then these two and the regs they have handed out in the last 5 years (with the exception of 'Knock Out Qualifying') makes a good case for dementia!

If MBZ joins them ~ mark my words... Bernie and Max are history!
