Default Best & cheapest place to by a catalytic converter?

Recently my check engine light came on, and after a diagnostic test at Pep Boys, they said it was the catalytic converter. My relative called places and the cheapest part was $667. Maybe I just don't know prices on Subaru parts, but that sounds very pricey?
I looked online, but many were not 50-state-legal, and I live in California.
Are there places where I can buy cheaper parts? (and allowed in Cali)

Edit: The CEL was reset while a diagnostic check, so I decided to go smog check, and it appears, that it passes! I'll be getting a new O2 sensor and hopefully my CEL won't come on again.

no problem! I think the single HFC is cali emission friendly too, but the dual is your safest bet.

To think I was really going to pay almost $700.

And I need to smog my car in a short matter of time.
Thanks again!

i am 10000% positive your cat is fine and its just an o2 sensor. they just want to rape you for money and not waste there time replacing a little sensor

Maybe?! haha...but probably not me, because I'm in Northern Sac most the time.

But I have another question in mind, if the tech see's that its an aftermarket part, can't he still fail the test?
