| Well since I am about to swap my rs I thought it might be a good time to start a build thread. The car is 1999 2.5 rs. How I got the car in the first place is kind of a funny story. I grew up on subaru's, my first car was a 1984 GL wagon which we beat into the ground. My dad had a 1987 GL turbo wagon for for 10 years while it was no speed demon the turbo was cool. A friend of mine owned the car before me and the timing belt broke so he brought it to my shop for me to look at. Upon taking it apart it was clear the motor was done. A low mileage replacement was found but he could not afford the labor to put it in. The car sat at my shop for almost a year until he decided to move to Arizona and just sold the car to me for $2000 with the new motor not installed. This car was no peach. It had seen hundreds of miles of hard rally time but I had wanted it since the first time I sat in it. I quickly installed the motor and drove it as a dd for about a year. On July fourth of this year the car was hydo locked while enjoying a little off road adventure. So starting over at square one I decided it was swap time. Last week I got a 1997 ej20g from Jhot with the matching rear diff. and started tearing the car apart........ Powertrain: 1997 ej20H short block w/low friction coated pistons, ej20g shim on bucket heads, jdm tdo4, jdm ARC airfilter and housing. RS tranny F1 Stage 2 clutch (every else hates them but mine works!) Lite weight flywheel Suspension: KYB AGXs on stock springs 02 WRX rsb Interior: Version 5 wrx gauge cluster version 6 wrx steering wheel 05 sti boost gauge egt/oil pressure/wideband AFM gauges double din pioneer dvd head unit Exterior: 2004 style sti scoop version 6 font Lip Last edited by rs182; 11-04-2009 at 03:45 PM.. |

| I forgot about my member journal here lol So for those who don't know my swap motor had a knock in it from the get go. I contacted Jhot and they gave me a partial refund on the motor . I drove it around for a few weeks because the knock never got any worse. After about 500 miles I just couldn't take the noise anymore. I pulled the motor and found a loose wrist pin and scored cylinders along with a new head gasket. This motor was trash from the get go. It looks like it was severely over heated in japan. My guess is it blew a head gasket and hydro locked the number 4 cylinder causing the pistons to try and seize. Instead of fixing it they just threw in a new head gasket and shipped it off to the US. I priced the parts and machine work and it was more that double what my refund was so time for a new block. I searched for weeks trying to find a late g block but no one had one. I found a 96 20H block for a 300 shipped to my door so I Jumped on it. Here is my build plan as of now 20H block with 8.5:1 static compression pistons Forester 20g heads 4w ecu for now but I just ordered a MS stand alone!!! I think this will turn out well since the forester motor was 9:1 and required pricey and hard to find high octane fuel (I was mixing 50/50 of 91 octane and race gas) The 8.5:1 should make for a much safer compression with the jdm ecu. I dont feel I will lose much if any horsepower because the ecu should add timing instead of pulling it to control knock. The block should be here friday and I have new acl bearing, hastings rings, and a gasket kit waiting for it!

| got the motor together and she is up and running! I found a smokin deal on a set of 20k heads that I couldn't pass up. My final motor set is as follows 20h short block 8.5:1 with hastings rings and acl bearings 20k heads vf22 It is using a 4w ecu with apexi fuel and timing control at the moment. I am going to get it tuned and dyno next month. It is currently running on a road tune done by your truely and it spools very quickly to 12 psi max. I am very happy with the setup so far! |
