Here's my story

With my dad being a mechanic I've always been into cars and it didn't have to be a domestic or an import, it just had to have an engine in it that I could fiddle around with. In my senior year in high school (the year "The Fast and The Furious" came out), I really got turned on to the import market but I really didn't know what I wanted. After graduation, my father gave me his 1989 Isuzu Impulse that needed to be rebuilt. I learned everything I know now about cars from that Impulse. After fooling around a bit with the Isuzu, I knew I was wanting something a bit more fun and it had to have an air conditioner (which my Impulse didn't). Then, I became good friends with my pal James who owns a 2005 STI. He really got me hooked on the Subaru scene and that's when my hunt for an Impreza began. At first I was wanting an STI because I saw and felt the power my friends car had, but after looking for awhile I found nothing but modded and raced out Subaru's, both WRX and STI's. Then.....while looking for an STI on autotrader, I found a nice looking Impreza RS. She was Aspen White and came with some very nice looking rims. The car was for sale in Austin, so I went for a test drive. While it didn't have the power I was wanting, it did however have the handling I loved so much and of course bone stock with no mods. The dealership wanted $16500 plus TTL and I talked them down to $15000 out the door. It was said and done and I was in the Subaru game.

My first car: 1989 2.3 Liter Isuzu Impulse

Im just wondering how the Raptor SC kit tunes around the resonator problem or does this not even matter when FI is used? Hmm, good question.

Or, how about I test some waters and create a new intake design. Keeping everything from the wrx inlet to the resonator but utilizing the K&N filter and the injen intake. I think I could possibly hook the apollo filter to the snorkus end and still have the same "trouble free" effect as when using the stock filter box. Hmmm, maybe :)

Im not entirely sure what the angle of that bend is. I actually had to use the silicone coupler to make up for where the aluminum ends, it basically came up a little short. You can also see that I had to add a small aluminum tube piece just right after the flex coupler to make it all line up.

Anyways, I just drove my car around for a good 30 minutes with the OEM intake and rallitek tune. All I can say is wow, how did I ever miss my low end torque!! The car drives much better in the city streets now and I bet it will perform better in the short canyon twisties and gymkhana's. The low end tq will also help in rallyx (if I ever get to do them). The injen intake was pretty much designed for high end power and speed. I did a couple of foot to the metal runs on the hwy in 5th gear using the stock intake and it basically feels the same minus the cone filter intake noise.

In the end I would rather have a good city driving car than to have to mash the pedal to get going. Im gonna swap out the perrin foam filter for this >> Apexi Panel Filter as the perrin filter uses oil and is quite old by now.

ScottyB, I may still have something to learn from all of this. In a way I can get stubborn and ignorant in order to have things my way. It’s been a long time since I’ve read through all of the posts on williaty's thread so I might just have to re-read it all. Just out of curiosity, what would happen to the engine if I never use the snorkus? I’ve been without one for at least 5 years now.

God I hate our engines! Why must they be so damn picky! I’m just going to throw the white flag in the air and admit to myself that the SOHC engine don’t produce enough power for me at this point. I’m done playing with different intake setups and I will just start saving up for some forced induction :)

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my car since I first bought it. I was so happy when Injen first came out with an intake for our 05s and then to stumble apon williatys thread made me hate it. Then the AP came out a little later in hoping to use the tune to get around the resonance problem. And in a way it does just that, "get around" the problem. I’ve had CELs ever since I worked on my exhaust system so I asked Sean to include some tunes to get rid of them (PO420). I honestly don’t know what to think anymore.

Anyways, I’m just going to leave the intake stock for now and probably try and find that snorkus and slap it on too ;)

without the snorkus you're just going to send the engine into an extreme rich state under 2000 RPM if you floor it. it will feel like the engine is seriously bogging. you're not going to hurt it really, its just not going to run at max potential in that part of the powerband. for guys that drive in traffic alot it makes sense to keep it. the reason this happens is that under 2000 RPM the boxer makes a harmonic resonance in the intake tract that causes the air to vibrate across the MAF at a frequency that makes the MAF think its seeing far more airflow that it actually is. so, the MAF freaks out and dumps fuel into the engine to compensate for a huge amount of airflow it thinks its seeing, but actually isn't. the snorkus is shaped in such a way that the vibrations cancel out, and the MAF sees the correct airflow amounts at all times. that's the downfall of aftermarket intakes - you might see more airflow up top, but without that snorkus to cancel out the odd resonation you're going to see bogging down low. the solution is a hybrid setup that uses the front half (stock airbox and snorkus) of the intake with the remainder after the MAF being aftermarket (short ram or CAI tubing from the MAF into the throttle body). its not as loud as a short ram but reportedly makes more power than stock with no ill side effects.

hey, you haven't been anywhere most of us haven't been ourselves when it comes to getting more out of these cars! i'll be the first to admit it can be frustrating. but, how many other mass produced flat-engined cars are out there? our suby's are pretty unique, so they require a bit more forethought and some unorthodox methods sometimes to get the most out of them. but there are plenty of advantages too, maybe not always in big-time performance but in servicing and drivability. not to mention there is a huge community of like-minded enthusiasts to help you out.

there's no getting around the fact that the EJ25 series design is going on what, 16 years old at this point, almost completely unchanged except for drive-by-wire and AVCS? its an outdated but reliable engine. we're never going to make power the way guys with K20's or 2ZZ's will, or without boost. but, don't forget that if you do your homework and are willing to put in the time, you can still wake these things up. take a look at Carbotron's thread, he's pretty much used off-the-shelf parts but put a lot of thought into the prep and execution...and he's probably making damn near WRX horsepower or more, with little sacrifice in gas mileage or daily driver issues. hell the compression is still stock!
http://www.rs25.com/forums/f145/t120446-240hp-n-wagon-big-carbon-wing-rebuilt-dccd.html

there's also guys like SiFuSpec on NASIOC who ran a nearly stock-powered 2005 RS and tore up his local autocross class because his suspension setup was nearly perfect for him to compete with. these cars can still surprise you.

if you want "easy-button" power, the RS is probably not going to keep you happy in the long run. but that doesn't mean it isn't possible. if you're really craving power and plan on keeping your car, it might be worthwhile to look into a swap. i don't want to talk you out of your goals, and i've had some love/hate times with my car too (just did head gaskets, THAT pissed me off) but i'd hate to see you end up dissapointed with your project. there are plenty of ways to enjoy the car, take things a little at a time and see what the other guys are up to and it might help!

I like my 05 RS. But I'm not making "power" I just want reliable and it to handle good and sound decent. I daily drive my RS and I love the simplicity of it. I have an STI cat back, STI snorkus/scoop, k&n drop in, WRX front caliper brackets/rotors and a Genome axle back on the way and a borla header getting ceramic coated, also I am running 05 STI struts all around with 07 STI springs (welded, redrilled and custom spacers) and I would like to do sways and as bushings wear I replace them with ones from TIC.

I haven't had any issues other than "regular maintenance"

I say hold the rs for a daily and snag a WRX or STI for fun ;)

I need to go read this thread on the snorkus deal though. Thanks for the links :)

And to those that ask I have an 07 limited WRX w larger turbo ewg and stuff:)

Suave, thats pretty sweet! Like you said, Ive been also thinking of just keeping the RS the way it is and snagging up something else for more fun in the power department but I love not having a car payment ;)

I had some time the other day to install my new radar detector mount. I bought this little mount from a e bay member tomascmt. It’s a pretty simple yet ingenious way of mounting your detector semi permanently to your windshield. I was seriously getting tired of the damn suction cups falling off or make stains on my window. I wanted to get the blendmount at first but the $80 price tag just didn’t do it for me. This one only cost me $21 and it does just as good of a job while being a little more hidden. Sorry for the shitty 1st gen BB curve photos but you get the idea :)

Heres the mount and then with everything attached and ready to go.

First I figured out where I wanted to mount the detector and I used some painters tape to level off and mark where to put the mount.

I then peeled off the backing which is some sort of high grade industrial 3M tape.

Image

Stuck it on the windshield and pushed all around the mount to make sure it grips really well.

Image

Now of course since the mount is made of aluminum, there will be some spots where the tape wont make complete contact but Im not too worried about this. I can take a heatgun later and heat up the glass and push harder. Note: this tape is super strong and I dont ever see this coming off just with the weight of the detector.

All set and done.

One from the rear glass so there isnt an obstructed view to detect from the back.

So far I am very happy with the way this mount turned out. Its very solid in the way its made and in the way it mounts to the windshield.

On a side note: Im using the Solo S2 and this thing is just amazing in detecting the popo. When I have it set to auto, it will alert me of cruisers even around corners ;) Dont get me wrong, Im not a speed demon  but its nice to have for when Im on the hwy.

Acually I was kind of hesitant about buying one at first and then I got a deal on it that I couldnt turn down. Never looked back.

Escort 8500?
Escort Solo S2 (wireless) trick is to use the energizer lithium batteries. They last for months compared to the regular alk ones.

Blendmount is legit, only thing I'll buy!
I know Ben, but for $80 I wouldnt buy it. Hell, that mount almost cost as much as what I payed for the detector itself.

^ Thanks! This is probably one of the most talked about mods Ive done when ever I go to meets ;) Anyways, heres what I did. First I bought me a scoop delete from these guys > kstech . There products are top knotch! I then stenciled the outline of it onto a piece of 22ga aluminum sheet, then I used snips and a steady hand to cut it out. I also used a griding stone to smooth out the edges. Now, I cut down two parallel slits and used a flat surface to bend the openening down. Now if you leave it the way it is and dont do the following step, you will have problems later so its important. Where the two slits end, you need to take a fairly large drill bit and cut out a circle on both ends. This step keeps the aluminum from slicing down on its own with its own weight. Your basically creating an arc to support the ends. I then used some silicone weather sealant and put everything on to the scoop whole and tightened it all down. The black stuff is actually a sheet of foam tape that you can get fro hobby lobby. This keeps the aluminum slit from rattling on either the tq box or the Injen intake. Hope that helps.

This mod basically lets the engine breathe out but whenever it rains or when I wash the car, the water flows behind the transmission and stays away from the engine and its wires and other componenets. Make sure you use weather sealant otherwise the water will get throught.

I got really lucky with the hood :) I bought her for only $50 and I sold my RS hood for over $150 to some guy that FMICed his STi. The weight comparison between the steel RS hood and the aluminum STi hood is just rediculous. I can hold up the hood with one hand while I take it off, thats how light it is. Alot of people think that its a CF hood at first but then notice the gold flakes in the paint ;)
