i have always used chamois' and never had an issue. when you are finished washing/rinsing the car then soak the chamois, wring it out, and start on the car. the chamois work best if they are soaked then wrung out.

then after that be patient. mostly on the roof or trunk you have to do a pass with a chamois, wring it out, then dry the roof/trunk again to get all (large majority) of the water off.

ohh, and dont have any sunlight on the car when you dry it, leaves crazy water spots. if you do find some just rub them with the wrung out chamois, usually takes my water spots away.

the spats are new and invariably a bird crapped on my car the next day

Exactly. Right nowI wash mine in 95+ degree weather every weekend. I never have spots unless I forget to rewet everything every few minutes. Having a wax car makes a little more difficult since the water usually beads, which allows the sun and water to make nice little water spots. If you have a good base/protective wax, and have water spots when you're done washing, just go over the whole thing with a good liquid polish/gloss...always works for me.

1. Shake car
2. Squeegee or chamois
3. If there is still leftover water spots either wax as you dry or quik detail (mequiars)

Ta da no spots of water, Unless they sneak out from teh cracks then get some more quik detail and bam golden.

Wait... the chamois leaves streaks... but you let it sit in the shade to dry? lol!... and you dont get water spots from leaving it in the shade to dry? Wierd if you dont.

Like WCU said. The well water is not harmful if you dry it yourself. Its only harmful to the paint when you let the sun do the drying or letting it sit and dry in the shade like crazy man up there. lol

It's not about drying the car bone dry with a chamois, its about breaking down the water molecules so they are small enough not to streak or leave water marks, and dry faster, It's the same ideal as misting the car when you rinse it.

I add this because I was always dismayed by soaked chamois'.. so one day I was out of towels, and wrung out my chamois, and it was like it was dry all over again, 3 passes, one chamois, streak and water spot free. Drying in the shade helps too.
I was about to comment on the 4 chamois deal. You have to wring them out and reuse like Drak said. I work at a detail shop and we use chamois and we do not have problems with streaks on any color car.

my technique is after car is washed thoroughly to mist it with water. then dry it with 1 large terrycloth towel that is slightly damp from hose water and another smaller damp towel for the rims. dry the entire body of the car starting at the top and working down. then pop the trunk and dry the trunk dam. then all 4 door jams get dryed. then take the smaller towel and clean/dry the wheels. and lastly use the wheel towel and dry/clean the inner fender lip and exhuast tip. voila!!! looking good now! no spotting or streaks! **always wash and dry towels or chaomis after being used to prevent the dirt scratching the paint**

The best kind of towel to dry your car with is a waffleweave microfiber. These will help reduce the amount of micro marring on the paint and they also hold more water than a towel of similar size. You can get them from Sonus, Cobra, and Pakshak.

If you wax your car, either turn your hose's nozel onto a soaker setting or just take of the nozzle and let the stream of water run down the car. It'll leave no water spots behind because its all running off the car like a river. Then just towel off the rest with a waffle weave.
