Default Compatability will 1.8L, 2.2L and 2.5 motors

Ok i have confusion with compatability with the 1.8L, 2.2L and 2.5L parts. For instance the intake manifolds and sensors. Why would I need a different ECU if I put phase I or phase II 2.2L in my car (96L) Whats the differance between 1993-2001 intake manifolds and impreza L motors? Will a intake manifold from a 1993 1.8L fit on a 2001 2.2L? Can someone coach me through some stuff? I have been reading through different threads and forums. When I finally think "Sweet a phase II 2.2L will work fine in my 96 L, I ask and people say no it wont; you need a new wiring harness" I am just confused. Also does it matter if I get a 2.2L out of a manual 5 speed car and bolt it to my 4EAT auto car? Will it work fine with my Auto ECU? So much to take in lol

I don't have time to give a tutorial right now, but suffice to say....there are easy ways to make swaps happen and there are hard ways.

If you keep your current engine harness and sensors, the ECU won't know what motor you have in there....it will just continue to try and keep the A/F within it's tolerance. It's just a machine......it doesn't care what it's controlling, only that it CAN or CANNOT control it.

I'll try to elaborate later......

Yeah I get that part, I just dont get what people say when they tell me "You need a whole new engine harness and ECU to run a phase II 2.2 in place of my phase I 2.2. What would I need if I wanted to run a 2.5L in my car? Would I need a full engine harness and ECU? Could I use my 4EAT Tranny?

There seem to be a lot of people talking about "hybrid" motors here, which I believe is a 2.5 N/A short block (any phase) with 2.2 (phase 1) heads. Since your car is already wired to use phase 1 2.2 heads (right?), you could do that. That might be your best option.

From what I understand, the phase II stuff is OBD 2 (maybe?) and that's what makes you need to rewire in order to run it.

Is your car OBD I still?

Oh, and a motor out of an auto or manual car shouldn't matter. It's the ECU in the car that matters. The ECU needs to match the transmission.

Okay, looking at your profile, you have a 96 L with an EJ22. If you want to run an EJ25 with as little drama as possible, go with a EJ25D since the intake manifold has the external IACV already, which matches your current setup. This swap should literally be plug&play. Put your EJ22 engine harness on the EJ25 and swap the coil to it. All the plugs should be the same shape, except maybe the evap solenoids or AC air assist solenoid, which can be brought over from the EJ22 as well.

^ doesn't the timing get thrown off? I mean you're going from a SOHC to a DOHC...?

Wait a sec. I have OBD2 though. I was just told my motor is a phase 1. I guess it could be a phase II, I dont know. All I know, its a 96 L with a 2.2L automatic.
