Default Tranny pops out of 4th & 5th

Good day all;
I bought my 94 L (1.8L, 5sp, Fwd, 150,000 miles) last week ($800.00) over in Greensboro, then drove it home to Fayetteville NC. Body is very good, seats are trashed (where the vinyl took a beating from the sun)...
Overall i'm pleased with her since she'll serve as a DD. Having said that I need to have the tranny looked at, 1st through 3rd work just fine, but when i put it into 4th or 5th it pops back out, if I hold it in gear then i hear/feel gear grinding... I suspected/hoped that it was the sloppy shift linkage, so i swapped the bushings out but to no avail, still pops out of gear. Guys at work felt that it is the synchros, now from what i've read here the best plan is to find a salvage yard tranny and put that in...
There is one thing i never saw addressed in other threads... If I were to find an AWD tranny, could i use that in my FWD application. I'm assuming it's easier to find an AWD tranny
An interesting aside... My car is a canadian car, speedo is in KPH, service records from north of the border as well
Thanks for your time
Gary

Time for a new tranny! Maybe an AWD swap too. Search, FWD>AWD or something like that.

Good luck.

looks like you have two threads for the same thing...but ill copy and paste
Hey before you trash the tranny, you might want to check the input shaft nut. RS trannys are known for this to happen...The nut on the input shaft backs off which allows the linkage to fall out of gear. Pull the back end of the tranny off and check if that nut is steaked. Factory does not always steak the nut down very well. If it is loose, buy a new nut tighten it to 85ft/lbs and steak it.

At the moment i'm not interested in an AWD upgrade, just want to make her reliable...
I read about the input shaft nut over on scoobymod.com, obviously alot of work, if i swappped out the tranny i'd be in for at least the same amount of work though...
Now the guy i bought the Imp from told me that the 4th/5th problem has been there for 3 years, the gears were not needed for in town running so it wasn't an issue. I'm gonna roll the dice on this one since she's not my only means of transport and wait til the fall to swap out the tranny. (too hot down here in NC during the summer)
I've seen trannys go for about $200.00 is that a fair price to pay...
Thanks for the advice so far
Gary

To ask a question that may have been over looked in my first post...
If I decide to get another tranny & wish to stay fwd, can I use an AWD tranny?
Thanks again
Gary
