| So the good news.....I got my engine in and after a small issue with a leaking injector it fired right up. The bad news.....well it's making a horrible noise. I'm pretty sure I narrowed it down to 2 possibility's. It's coming from the flywheel area and sounds like a intermediate banging of metal. Since the car will move and the clutch seems to engage/disengage smoothly and will hold the torque I don't think it's the clutch. I think it's either from the pins on the flywheel, or the starter on the ring gear. It's a Fidanza flywheel and the pins for the clutch stick out a little bit more then on the stock flywheel. It's not much and I thought there would be plenty of space for them but perhaps not. Or the starter ring. Has anyone had any issues with their starter alignment? I know in allot of vehicles they have to be aligned with shims, but I don't have much experience with Subys. The other thing I thought of is the throwout bearing but I spun it by hand before installing the engine and it spun smoothly and quietly. Has anyone had a similar issue or might know what I'm dealing with? Any help would be appreciated I really don't want to pull the engine back out. Jason |

| nope, doesn't stop with the clutch in or out, In gear or in neutral. It must have something to do with the rotating assembly, either the flywheel or the pressure plate. I popped out the starter and turned the engine so I can feel the pins and they "feel" fine. I need a step stool to see them (if it's even possible). |

| oh god I hope it's not a rod bearing. the engine rotated smoothly before I put it in. Also, I don't have a dust plate...did the older engines use them? |

i hate to say it but. if the noise goes away when you rev the motor its likly to be rod bearing. just go search youtube for bad rod bearings

| could the sound your hearing be your water pump going due to a need in changing your timing belt? just throwing it out there. My buddys 02 wrx made a horrible sound and he later found out it was the water pump cause his Timing belt was about ready to brake off

| """""""""""""""""""" | Maybe it's an issue with the pilot bearing. You did put one in right? Maybe you forgot to tighten a pressure plate bolt. If I were you I'd yank the motor and find out for sure. The older engines did have a dust plate. If you don't have one than that's not the source of the noise. Good luck. |

| I sorta misspoke when I said "intermittent". When the engine is running, it sounds steady, varying with RPM. When you turn the engine over by hand it seems like there are two spots about 120deg apart. Thats why I was thinking the pins, but I realized the pressure plate is taller then the pins. Maybe somehow the pressure plate didn't end up sitting flat and it's rubbing on the way around? I guess I'll just have to pull the engine back out, should be faster the second time. |
