One guy I work with was smoking it in a shared office, it was almost a week before anyone noticed he was using that thing

My guess is that the coughing is caused by him stopping smoking real cigarettes. That's a very common thing.

They claim you can use these anywhere, but I'd bet you would get a lot of strange looks "smoking" these in public, non-smoking areas.

Still, it's a neat idea...

They use a chemical called Propylene Glycol to vaporize the nicotine, it creates an affect called "Throat Hit". The PG builds up if you don't drink enough water and can cause you to cough. But drink some water and it goes away. They also use PG as long term therapy for people with asthma (I've been reading up on a lot of things today). It does appear that a lot of the "side effects" of e-smoking are due to people that are quitting smoking as well. You think it's not "normal" but forget that you've been smoking for however long, and that your body needs to readjust.

Also, coughing can occur from the Liquid Nicotine used. Different nicotine's will have a different potency and vaporize differently.

They actually suggest that you go up to someone at first and ask. Because to anyone else, it would look like you are smoking if you don't explain what it is you are doing. Over time, this will all pass as the popularity of E-cigarettes grow here in the US.
