Default Write Up: JDM STi V8 Seat Cushion Swap ---> USDM Seat Base for Height Adjustment

SO,

Since I didn't take photos the first time around....I went ahead and did the process again since it's pretty easy and documented this time for all of you who may want to attempt this.

I also took some photos of both bare seat bases and measured them. They (my particular seat) are exactly the same width and length. Photos of this will be at the end.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED

Hands
Phillips Head Screwdriver
12mm Socket
14mm Socket

USDM Driver Seat w/Height Adjustment (Mine came from my Saabaru stock interior)

JDM Passenger Seat

Now onto the start of the project ---->

First, there are 2 plastic covers that will prevent you from taking off the seats siding (Only 1 will apply to the JDM passenger seat disassemble. This is a backwards takedown since I already did the swap.)

Remove to reveal 12mm bolt and 1 screw.

After these are taken off you have this. (Remember this will be slightly different when taking apart the passenger JDM seat but you'll have to do this with your donor USDM seat anyway)

You can now see 1 of the screws needed to be taken off to remove the cover.

Here are the other 2. Front and Back of the cover is where they are located.

For the Cover on the other side of the seat there are only 2 screws. Side and Back locations.

Now that the covers are removed, you reveal the bolts that keep the upper section of the seat attached to the bottom portion of the seat. 4 14mm bolts total (circled in red). Remove them to separate the sections.

Here is both top sections from each USDM and JDM. The brackets are identical so no need to swap over this part. You simply can just bolt the JDM top section to the USDM bottom section.

JDM seat cushion on JDM base next to USDM base

Left - USDM base Right - JDM base

First photo - JDM Base Width - 17.5in wide by 18in length
Second photo - USDM Base Width 17.5in wide by 18in length

Flip over the base to unclip the cushion from base. 2 large clips front/back and 2 smaller clips per side.

Flip the seat back over once clips are removed. Take off JDM seat by slowly lifting cushion off of base. Use same process to place onto USDM base.

This particular V8 seat already had the holes cut in the fabric for the height adjustment knobs. You might have to make the holes yourself if they aren't present.

JDM cushion swapped over to USDM base. You can see that in this case there is no difference to being on the JDM base.

After you clip the cushion onto the USDM base you're ready to reverse the process. Grab the top section of the JDM seat and bolt it onto the USDM seat base with the JDM cushion now in place. Put the covers back on and you're done. Ready to install in your vehicle.

Hope this helped all of you curious about this kind of swap. It's really easy and doesn't take more than an hour or so.

Cheers,

Tyler

HOLY CRAP!

This has to be something to do with your saaaabaru seats(or 04-05 WRX seats). My bugeye ones wouldn't work and my v8s are the exact same as yours. That's amazing, this is an amazing article. I CALL STICKY!!!! /reported as such.

You rock, we alllllll owe you for this!

I've been waiting for somebody to figure this out for a loong time.

I just wonder if this will work with GC JDM seats too.

This should be added to the DIY thread.

No problem everyone. Glad I can help.

Mad Ra88bit - I wouldn't be surprised if they changed bases for the 04+

Already reported as such. (DIY)

And, I'll go for the JDM GC setup as soon as mine show up.

I never had a set of 04-05 (that stubby handle) USDM adjustable seats to test with. I just made lower rails. This write up rocks my socks. ROBT will be addicted to this thread and I'll get a few AIM messages tomorrow. hehe

Oh I know that they did. The 02-03 is weird, and wouldn't match up with my V8s. The 04-05 STi seats wouldn't match up either. The only seats that the Saaabaru shares seats with is the 04-05 seat. As far as I can understand.

The community owes you big time, Sir.

On the GC front, are you guys wanting to know if you could do the same thing just with GC JDM cushions? Was there even a height adjustment option on any of the older USDM GC models? haha.

I don't recall my old RS having any but you never know. Long time ago.

The RS doesn't have it in the US, but I'm wondering if the UK versions did.
